CIC (Pty) Ltd can trace its history back to 1st May 1946. Starting out as JJ van Zyl (Pty) Limited incorporated in Namibia as a sales distribution agency in Windhoek. After nearly 20 years in business, the legal name changed to Indo Atlantic in 1963 and became the single largest grocery agency business within Namibia.

On 30 June 1984 management affected a management buyout of operations, in the then South West Africa and became known as Commercial Investment Corporation (Pty) Ltd, today known and referred to as CIC (Pty) Ltd. Under their guidance the company expanded rapidly and trading divisions evolved within CIC (Pty) Ltd namely, Indo Atlantic as the first, B.Grundleger in 1983, PAN African Sales in 1991, Supra Sales and Brockmann Kriess in 1997.

CIC (Pty) Ltd grew from strength to strength and was listed on the Johannesburg stock exchange in 2007. With the strong backing of true multi‐national Southern African corporate CIC Holdings, whose entire share capital is in turn held by IMPERIAL, CIC proudly became part of the Imperial group in 2010.
